224072 SE Seminar Biblical Studies and Historical Theology: Advanced Exemplary Study: What does God have to do with Corona? The theodicy question is illuminated biblically and systematically
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 06.11.2021 | Place course on memo listao. Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Andreas Vonach ao. Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Andreas Vonach, +43 512 507 85611
The participants know (1) biblical texts and approaches to the answer, as well as (2) philosophical and systematic-theological concepts that are relevant to the theodicy question, and they can (3) relate both to one another in existential relevance, in particular to the question, how God's goodness, omnipotence and action can be understood in view of the corona pandemic.
In view of the corona pandemic, how can one still speak of God's goodness, omnipotence and God's action? Today's systematic theology tends to severely limit God's possibilities of direct influence in the world on the basis of human freedom, while conversely the Bible emphasizes God's omnipotence even more, especially in crisis situations. This creates a gap between liberal Christianity and biblically oriented evangelicalism. But is there still a good middle ground between Bible fundamentalism and semi-ideism? In this seminar we will deal with the theodicy question in the book of Job as well as with the "narrative theodicy" in the prehistory of Genesis and examine what can be gained from such biblical approaches for today's existential theodicy questions (especially regarding Corona) and how these can be gained with contemporary ones systematic-theological drafts can be related.
