Students acquire the ability to deal with current empirical studies and to apply the first steps of a research process (formulation of a research issue, data collection, method reflection) autonomously in terms of quality and/or quantity or method.

The seminar introduces the philosophy and theory of (empirical social) science, its structure, and methods. It starts from asking questions such as What is science?, What is the scientific method?, How is knowledge generated?, or How is scientific progress made?, Then, it introduces the basics of scientific methodologies in the social sciences covering theory building, experimental, quantitative, or qualitative data collection, and data analysis. With respect to forms of data collection, the seminar touches upon the basics of laboratory, field, and survey experimentation, survey research and quantitative text-analysis, as well as interviewing, focus groups, and archival research. Throughout the seminar students, in groups, will develop a research topic and question, sketch a theory, and draft an appropriate research design borrowing from one or more of the introduced methods.
