§ 5 (1) 3. b 2 PS Applied Methods of Social Science

Students acquire the ability to deal with current empirical studies and to apply the first steps of a research process (formulation of a research issue, data collection, method reflection) autonomously in terms of quality and/or quantity or method.

How to ask relevant and empircally testable Research questions? And how to find answers to these questions? These questions are in the focus of this course. We scrutinise central aspects of the philosophy of science, and methodological basics in the first part of the seminar. Students learn core aspects of a good scientific research design, different research techniques and central problems of causal inferences.
In the second part, students apply the new knowledge.

A mix of prerecorded content and in-session discussion, repetition and application of the learned knowledge.

The grade is composed of the following parts, each of which must be completed successfully in order to pass: attendance and active participation in the course sessions (15%), presentation (15%), final research paper concept (35%), short exam (35%).

Students receive the reading material in class.
