Students are able to explain the functionality and differentiation of the political system of the EU. They discuss and answer questions illustrated by individual organs and institutions of internal and institutional decision-making processes and the characteristics of individual political fields.
Migration and integration politics in the European Union
International Migration and Mobility challenge fundamental principles of the EU. Especially issues of solidarity and responsibility are controversial and remain potentially divisive issues. This lecture-practical course (VU) introduces students to EU migration and asylum policies and politics. We discuss processes of policy making in the protection of the EU external borders, and in relation to the differences in the treatment of EU citizens (free movement), Third-country nationals, and refugees and asylum seekers. We then compare reception, settlement and integration in selected European states, focusing on different governmental levels (national, regional and local) and actors (governments, political parties, third sector). Our discussions are guided by principles of multi-level governance and the interrelation of governmental levels and actors within the EU.
