408307 VU Selected Topics in Sociology: Sociology of Culture
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 17.03.2022 | Place course on memo listCurr. 2021 § 5 (1) 15: This module serves to gain in-depth knowledge in selected subject areas of sociology. The students specialise in one or more subject(s) and acquire in-depth knowledge in them.
The subject of this lecture with exercises are some special problems of contemporary societies, analyzed from the Sociology of culture's perspective.
How is the formation, the continuance and the critique of ideologies shaped by the prevailing culture or coexisting cultures in the world of the everyday life?
What role do pieces of art play in this, especially those that have become massively effective due to their technical reproducibility?
Is the apparently omnipresent cultural industry always an expression of–and motor for– the formation of streamlined characters, or does the technical reproducibility of works of art, for example in film and photography, also contain emancipatory moments of a sensibility developed from below?
These and other burning questions of contemporary sociology of culture will be discussed in the course of the lecture with exercises on the basis of a few selected cinematic works, and should be brought to clear, i.e. conceptual concretization in the joint reflection.
Lecture with discussion, active participation and anticipated readings are necessary
Written exam at the end of the semester on the form of "take-home-exams".
