Curr. § 6 (1) 2: The lecture gives an overview of social and political ideas from the beginnings of intellectual history to the period of classical sociological theory starting in the 19th century. Reference is made to the importance for the current discourse in the social sciences.

Learning objective of the VO: The students can describe the history of social and political ideas in their meaning for contemporary social science.

The lecture gives an overview of social and political ideas from the beginnings of intellectual history to the prehistory of classical sociological theory in the 19th century. The key social and political ideas of European modernity are discussed with regard to four different thematic blocks: knowledge (how to define valid knowledge?), the political (how to organize life together?), the eocnomical (how to satisfy human needs?), and Europe / the world (how to reflect Eurocentrism?). The lecture identifies the relevance of these questions and historical debates for current discourses in the social sciences. Students get to know the theoretical approach of historical sociology.

This lecture is taught as a block in the first half of the semester (with online-elements and recording). The seminar that builds on the lecture will then take place at the same time in the second half of the semester.
