winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 01.09.2021 | Place course on memo listAquirement of special knowledge in economic and social history, focus on the description and discussion of global developments (trends and structurs) and stimulation of critical reflection of the these developments (in history and at present).
The lecture provides an overview on world economic and social history from a global historical perspective. Departing from a critical analysis of the present, trends and structures of general developments are explained and some selected aspects (development of living standards and associated challenges, resource and energy use, demography, migration, climate change, conflicts, catastrophes, etc.) are discussed in more depth.
The lecture is principally open for all those interested.
The actual proceedings of the VU will be subject to the current Covid situation during the whole semester. Hence, follow information in OLAT and check your uibk-e-mails! However, because of room scarcity, to proceed in presence will generally not be possible.
Students from programs other than economics, especially from sociology, political science and history, are explicitly welcome due to the interdisciplinary character of the course. In these cases, enrollment for the VU is also necessary online, later enrollment in person will not be possible in this semester.

- SDG 12 - Responsible consumption and production: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- SDG 13 - Climate action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy.
- SDG 14 - Life below water: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
- SDG 15 - Life on land: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
- SDG 16 - Peace, justice and strong institutions: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
- SDG 17 - Partnerships for the goals: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
