602019 PS Social Philosophy and Political Philosophy I:Coloniality of Nature? Philosophical Positions on the Human-Nature Relationship
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 17.08.2021 | Place course on memo listUnderstanding of positions of political and social philosophy on the human-nature relationship; knowledge of key philosophical debates on the concept of nature, problematization of essentialist distinctions between humans and nature and their relation to current debates and theory on (de)coloniality; learning central analytical categories of coloniality (power, knowledge, being, i.a.) and their relevance for political and social philosophy
In the past years, the question of the development of the human-nature relationship became increasingly relevant. In this seminar, we are going to engage with philosophical positions on that relationship. We are then going to ask if and how philosophical thinking played a role in forming this relationship. We are going to connect these insights to decolonial theory, which assumes that the structures that emerged during colonialism remain ingrained in current power relations and thus still take effect nowadays. Finally, we are going to address the question of coloniality of nature by discussing the human-nature relationship against this backdrop and by examining the interdependences of environmental destruction and inequality, difference and power.
