Discussion of the ambivalent relationship between politics and truth; understanding of the importance of "truth-speaking" as a moment and dimension of political action; knowledge of significant arguments on the relationship between politics and truth.

These days, too, it becomes repeatedly apparent that "lying," as Hannah Arendt writes in the context of her essay Truth and Politics (1967/1969), "seems to be part of the craft not only of the demagogue but also of the politician and even of the statesman. A remarkable and disturbing fact." (Arendt 1972, 44; translation AO) The relationship between truth and politics thus seems to be in need of clarification, since it is entangled and contentious. The following inter-university seminar, organized by the Department of Philosophy of the FernUniversität in Hagen (Thomas Bedorf, Steffen Herrmann) and the Department of  Philosophy of the University of Innsbruck (Andreas Oberprantacher, Sergej Seitz), will engage with this difficult relationship in the context of various arguments (Machiavelli, Kant, Nietzsche, Arendt, Lacan, Foucault, Laclau, Badiou, etc.) in order to understand what "truth-speaking", understood politically, might mean. The blocked seminar will take place towards the end of January 2022 partly in Innsbruck, partly at the University Center Obergurgl (31.01.-04.02.2022).

Inputs by instructors; reading and discussion of texts; case studies.

The block seminar will take place towards the end of January 2022 partly in Innsbruck, partly at the University Center Obergurgl (31.01.-04.02.2022). It should become clear by the end of October 2021 whether the seminar participants will receive funding for the accommodation costs (Obergurgl).
