The students learn to describe the phonetic inventory of German and to prepare transcripts of the German standard language as well as other varieties of contemporary German. The students become familiar with essential terms and concepts of phonetics and phonology. They also learn to use these terms and concepts to analyse natural language use.

The aim of the course is to provide an in-depth introduction to the phonetics and phonology of German. The basics of sound production, the (articulatory) classification of the German phonetic inventory as well as the theory and practice of phonetic transcription with IPA will be addressed. In addition, essential terms, concepts and theories of phonology as well as phonological processes, syllable structure and phonotactics are introduced in greater detail.
