Insights into research on the topic of nominal style. Capacity to independently analyse language data.
Nominal style, i.e. the condensation of information in nominal structures, is a characteristic of conceptual literacy. It is primarily associated with language use in subject specific, academic, legal or administrative contexts. In these areas, the use of nominal style is attributed to the needs of precision and economy of expression. From the perspective of comprehensibility, nominal style is often regarded as hindrance for understanding. From the perspective of literacy acquisition, the use of nominal style structures is considered an indicator of competence.
The seminar will first give an outline of the concept of nominal style and of the lexico-grammatic structures subsumed under it. Their function will be described and analyzed empirically in text examples. The focus is then directed to fields of application.
