Perception, storing and remembering are basic cognitive functions. However, the contents and the way we remember and write or talk about past events depends on many social and cultural factors. Memories are not static objects but individually and interactively constructed.

This course is dedicated to different linguistic perspectives on this phenomenon. Some focal points that we will touch upon:

  • Talking about memories, e.g. autobiographical storytelling, interviews, flashbulb memories, false memories, urban legends
  • Remembering and forgetting in old age
  • Juridical linguistics: testimonies in court
  • Construction of identity, self expression (e.g. on Instagram)
  • "Erinnerungskultur"
  • Psychotherapy
  • Embodiment, physical memories
  • Interdisciplinary approaches: interviews as a sociological method, oral history, language and trauma
You will conduct your own linguistic project with material you chose yourself.

Presentation, preparatory reading and discussions , 1-2 (short) presentation(s)

Oral and written: preparatory reading, active participation in class, 1-2 (short) presentation(s); written mid term exam, term paper
