This course introduces students to key concepts, trends, and directions in the field of Gender Studies through the analysis of a selection of texts in critical theory, contemporary literature, and contemporary social and poltical movements.

Women's and Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines feminist and queer theoretical perspectives including race/ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, nationality, religion, and their intersections. This course teaches students to think critically about the social construction of identity and the politics of knowledge production. Students will use these critical-thinking skills to understand people's lives within a global context and analyse the systems of oppression that contribute to continuing economic, political, and cultural inequalities. They will not only be encouraged to use gender as a category of analysis, but also to reflect on the manifestation of gender in their own lives, leading to a range of personal and intellectual discoveries.
