Introduction to the history of documentary film with a focus on Romania and the rather new genre of video essays.

The seminar consists of two parts, a theoretical and a project part.  First part: While the documentary film is at the beginning of film history, the video essay is a rather new genre for conveying scientific phenomena, though not only. We thus critically engage with genres that promise authenticity. We develop parameters from the respective stories that determine the genre. In the second part, you will either make a short documentary film or a video essay, either individually or in pairs. The theme of the project films will be "Heimat and Flight".
