winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 03.10.2021 | Place course on memo listStudents
- have aquired theoretical knowledige of key concepts closely linked to literature of migration, such as: transculturality, hybridity, in-between, multilingualism, francophony
- are familiar with the main topics and aesthetic strategies of the literature of migration
- know contemporary authors of Chinese descent writing in French
- are able to analyze and contextualize their works
- are able to reflect upon the 'risks and side effects' of this literary production. In such context contexts such as (literary) exoticsm, (auto-)orientalism and writing-in/writing-back are important
In a first theoretical part key-concepts in the context of migrant literature will be presented and discussed, articles about transculturality / hybridity, a poetics of migration etc. will be read.
A second part will deal with contemporary writers of Chinese descent who have moved to France and who have chosen to write in French. The following questions will be of interest:
- Why writers as Dai Sijie, Francois Cheng, Shan Sa or Gao Xingjiang (winner of the Nobel Prize in 2000) are so popular, (not only) in France?
- To what extent their writing differs from texts produced by authors of a former French colony (as Vietnam, for instance)?
- What are the main topics of this literary production? And what aesthetic strategies are used to speak about an 'in between identity'?
- To what extent the (traumatic) Chinese History (Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution, Tian An Men, etc.) is considered?
