Students know the most important linguistic theories and are able to refer their own research to these theories. 

This lecture gives an overview of important linguistic theories, with the focus lying on structuralism, generative grammar, and linguistic typology, but also on recent theoretical approaches, such as grammaticalization theory. Some issues of language contact research will also be discussed.
