Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture

‹Mannerism› is a controversially defined term. On the one hand, it functions as a historical epochal term to designate the phase of art development between the Renaissance and the Baroque. On the other hand, the characteristic of mannerist art to violate or abolish rules and norms is seen as a phenomenon of supra-historical significance. The proseminar attempts to incorporate both approaches. Starting with Italian painting, the question of the essential characteristics of Mannerist painting will be posed and questioned in the larger context of European art. By integrating the relevant treatises of the 16th and 17th centuries, the connection between form and theory will be addressed and a differentiated understanding of the content and problems of the phenomenon of Mannerism, which is often seen as the origin of Modernism, will be developed.
