Expanded knowledge and independent application of art-historical methods on examples referred to in the lecture.

During this seminar we will discover new interesting facts about the “Chamber of Wonder” and its related issues, trying to actualise and convey our memories and specific expertise about. The artificial has become a basic condition of our life. Where science creates artificial life and computers create virtual realities, instead of an absolute reality we have to consider the possibility of diverse realities, each of them as 'real' or 'artificial' as the others. Even the sky above us is becoming more and more artificial because it is populated with thousands of satellites that we will confuse with stars because they reflect the sunlight. When life in high-tech civilization creates a longing for the authentic, everything artificial is suspected of being banal and less valuable. The globally successful themed architecture shakes the foundations of this orientation, because it shows that there is an order only in connection with context and contingency. Artificial arrangements are therefore no less “real”, but rather fragile constructions which, at their core, contain a critique of essentialism. In the seminar we deal with the topic of the "Wunderkammer" (Chamber of Wonder). The course leads us from the chambers of curiosities of the early 16th century to those of the 19th century (Panorama, World Exhibitions, Department Stores and Passages) to those of the 20th century (Disneyland, Shopping Malls, Las Vegas, Dubai City) to the contemporary video games. The history of the “Wunderkammer” will be interpreted against a socially critical background, with aspects of philosophy, psychoanalysis, architecture, art and media being incorporated. In this way it should be shown that in view of the doubles and fakes of our day one can speak of a “re-enchantment” of the world.
