The acquisition of skills in dealing with historical and secondary literature as well as the ability to present orally and in written form; acquisition of knowledge and the application of relevant and helpful methods. The acquisition of knowledge about theories of social sciences and the ability to use them for Ancient History is the key feature of this seminar.

Elections were an integral part of the political culture in republican Rome, and laws such as the leges tabellariae were introduced to control the electoral excesses. It was thanks to Augustus and his successors that the increasingly violent election campaigns between senators disappeared from Rome. This did not mean, however, that there was no more electoral competition in the imperial period. At the municipal level, people continued to compete for the most important city offices such as the duovirate. In the exercise, this political development from the republic to the imperial period will be investigated by examining texts such as Cicero's Commentariolum petitionis, Pluatch's treatise Praecepta gerendae reipublicae, the graffiti from Pompeii or the inscribed municipial rights from the imperial period.
