The acquisition of basic skills in dealing with ancient sources.

The history of the Greek world in the Classical and Hellenistic periods is marked by a long series of wars, starting with the Persian Wars and ending with the battles fought in the east during the Roman civil wars. However, the cities suffered not only from such large-scale conflicts, but also from countless regional small-scale wars that ignited for example over border disputes. Especially during the era from Alexander the Great to the beginning of the Augustan Principate wars are considered an endemic problem of the Greek poleis. At the same time, we observe an increasing frequency and differentiation of instruments for peaceful conflict resolution and long-term peacekeeping. By reading relevant treaties that have survived in historiography or in the form of inscriptions, the exercise will trace this development and pursue the question, what contribution diplomacy and "international" law made to stabilize the Greek polis world.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks, exercises and a final essay.
