Justinian’s imperial order for a general compulsory baptism was the final point of a development throughout two centuries. Since 381 Christianity was the imperial state religion. While "paganism" is a standardization and simplification by the Christian opponent, we will analyse the Christian church, its relation to the Roman state as well as a multitude of regional cults and traditions, complex philosophical systems.
