640041 VO Women's History - Gender History: Of Women and Men in Antiquity
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 16.03.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents learn about life situations and living conditions of women and men in antiquity and become familiar with the specifics of women's and gender studies in ancient studies. The selected examples from different cultures of antiquity promote cross-cultural, networked thinking in the ancient worlds and encourage dealing with ancient texts from a historical perspective.
Based on written and visual sources and on recent research, the living conditions of women and men in antiquity are illuminated in their historical and cultural context: Their activities in the economy, in cult, or in health care; the scope of action of women and men in their social environment; concepts of the body and the sexualization of women and men. The focus on specific aspects makes it possible to refer to examples from different cultural areas and thus to provide a broad overview of the conditions depicted in the ancient sources.
Lecture, guided reading of ancient sources (in translation), discussion.
