640111 UE Near Eastern Languages: Introduction to Middle Egyptian (Hieroglyphic)
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 28.09.2021 | Place course on memo listStudents acquire knowledge of a Near Eastern language up to a level where reading of easy texts is possible. They advance their knowledge in this Near Eastern language and are able to independently interpret texts of this language. They learn how to use scientific aids andsharpen their logical thinking, advance their understanding of their own language and broaden their sensitivity for foreign ways of expression by dealing with the structures and means of expression of the foreign language.
Via intense weekly exercises students should learn the basics of the grammar of the classical form of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphically written language. The knowledge gained offers access to (a) the working of another ancient Near Eastern language, (b) a minimal capacity to judge existing translations where required and (c) further study of Middle Egyptian and other others forms of the Ancient Egyptian Language.
