Students will obtain skills in working with remembrance culture. Moreover, they will master the rudiments of critical source analysis and will develop a sense of scientific research methods concerning scientific literature and sources. Necessary sources and specialised literature will be researched independently and the resulting newly-acquired knowledge presented in a structured oral and written form. In order to work on a historical topic in manageable way, a relevant question will have been formulated and discussed in a scientific text which serves as a consolidation of historical knowledge about the period in question and the specific historical problems relating to this topic.

Bonnie Prince Charlie and Andreas Hofer are two well-known examples of "heroes" who were filled with different contents in the context of remembrance culture at different times. The focus of the proseminar is the comparison as well as the interweaving of Scottish and Tyrolean remembrance culture. It will deal with the whole range of facets, which can be compared via the events of the Jacobite uprising of 1745/46 and the Tyrolean uprising of 1809.

The seminar will be held in German and English. The proseminar papers can be written either in German or English.

Preparing and discussing of scientific texts, analysing sources, interactive oral, developing research questions, writing presentations and a seminar paper.

Students are expected to collaborate, to take part actively in class discussions, to present their own topics, and to submit a seminar paper.

Researching relevant literature is part of the students' tasks.

Positive assessment in compulsory module 1 and corresponding proof of completion should be provided by the end of October 2021.
