winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 05.10.2021 | Place course on memo listThe seminar introduces into methods of writing a thesis in the humanities (bachelor thesis), resources for research, methodology and historical sources. We will study early modern texts and discuss research literature. Students will improve skills how to present the concept and preliminary results of their thesis.
Markets, Consumption and Material Culture in the Alpine Region
The seminar focuses on economic developments and cultural environments in Tyrol and the Alpine region in the Early Modern Period. We will study places of trade in different regions and channels of commerce that global goods such as spices, coffee, sugar or textiles took from the production to the consumers. Consumption and the use of objects themselves will be analyzed: Which sources provide us with information about the possessions of a peasant household or about the collections of luxury objects at early modern courts? Using the example of early modern clothing, social differentiations, fashion and practices of recycling will be examined.
The seminar assists and supports the Bachelor's Thesis regarding working skills and content. Short lectures, reading, discussing of sources and research literature, interactive presentations by the students.
Course with continuous assessment: regular attendance of the sessions, exercises, active participation in discussions, interactive oral presentations, written concept and Bachelor's Thesis (about 30 pages).
Basic literature will be announced in the lessons. Research of further literature is part of the students' tasks.
Positive assessment of one module from the elective modules 7 to 12. The respective proof ought to be produced until the end of October 2021.
If possible, 1-2 sessions will take place as a short excursion (archive/museum visit)
