The prolific environmental historian Frank Uekötter has recently presented a monumental environmental history of the modern world, “The Vortex”. As part of the course, we will read and analyze his ambitious work in connection with earlier global environmental histories (e.g. Joachim Radkau’s “Natur und Macht” or John McNeill’s “Something New under the Sun”) as well as accompanying contemporary sources.
