winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 18.05.2021 | Place course on memo listAcquire skills in working with historical sources ( mainly maps) and present the newly acquired knowledge in oral and written form.
In the proseminar "Representations of Reality?" we intensively deal with historical maps as sources of historical science. The focus is on the question of how maps can be used in historical research as well as on the possibilities and limits of this source genre. In the course of the spatial turn, space has increasingly become the focus of (historical) scientific research in recent years, so that the question of the representation of space by means of maps is virtually imposing. On the basis of exemplary maps, we discuss the conditions of origin, modes of representation and political implications of this, at first glance, supposedly objective source genre.
Inputs from the course instructor, common discussion of scientific essays and sources, practice of scientific work and presentation.
A successful and fruitful, i.e. successful participation in the course requires a high degree of independent reading prior to the sessions.
Examination-immanent course with compulsory attendance: intensive and independent preparation of the common reading, impulse presentations, active participation in the discussions, oral and written contributions, writing of a final proseminar paper.
