The seminar traces the beginnings of current hygiene discourses and hygiene practices. However, the focus of the content discussed is not only on the "extraordinary" hygiene boom in historic times of crisis, but especially on the gradual development of measures relevant to everyday life. Aspects of personal hygiene, cleanliness in household and workplace, food hygiene as well as medical hygiene and its underlying science of bacteriology are analysed on the basis of selected case studies. Thus, the seminar spans a period from the 18th to the 21st century.
