Content: Introduction to the history of natural sciences and masculinities. Methods: improved skills in handling and contextualizing primary and secondary sources; improved skills in oral and written presentations.

In this seminar we deal with the relationship between natural science and masculinity in the 19th century. Our starting hypothesis is that scientific practices and lived masculinities mutually influenced each other, that scientific discourses flowed into the constructions of masculinity and, vice versa, that concepts of masculinity shaped scientific practices. But how did these influences unfold and what consequences did they have for gender orders both in the field of science and in society at large?

In this seminar we deal with the relationship between natural science and masculinity in the 19th century. Our starting hypothesis is that scientific practices and notions of hegemonic masculinity mutually influenced each other, that scientific discourses flowed into the constructions of hegemonic masculinity and, vice versa, that concepts of masculinity shaped scientific practice. But how did these influences unfold and what consequences did they have for the position of the professional scientist in society and for gender orders in the natural sciences and societies at large?

Seminar discussions, exercises, oral presentations, case studies.

Continuous assessment, regular and active participation in discussions, participation in the workshop, oral and written contributions.

To be announced in the course.

With the assistance of Nayra Hammann, MSc.
