Students will get to know main concepts and theories of critical gender studies as well as important debates.
This course offers a historical overview of the beginnings and developments of women's studies and gender studies. Central terms will be discussed, debates and main thinkers of critical gender studies will be introduced. On the basis of source material and secondary texts, the different positions will be discussed. In addition to a chronological overview, the course will focus on the following topics:
- the social construction of gender
- gender and class
- gender and race
- body history
- masculinity
- intersectionality
Input by course instructor, class discussions, source and text reading, peer learning, and a written assignment during the semester.
