Students will become familiar with key research achievements in modern theoretical and experimental quantum physics. They will also understand and be able to interpret and analyze research articles presenting these achievements.

We will examine ten seminal research articles as a window onto contemporary quantum research. Each research article will be a starting point for discussing the broader context of the topic. Topics will include atom-light interactions, laser cooling, traps for atoms and ions, quantum gases, and quantum information.

Alternating lectures from a theoretical and an experimental perspective.

A single written examination at the end of the course.

A list of research articles will be provided at the first course meeting along with supplemental material when appropriate.

The first lecture will take place in the second week of the semester, on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 8:15 in HSB 9.  There will be no lectures in the first week of the semester.
