Students who have completed this course should understand, be able to report and apply the content of this lecture.

PRACTICAL ASTRONOMY LECTURES (VU2) AND EXERCISES (PR1) SUITABLE FOR ALL STUDENTS The lectures (2 hours) take place in the 'Praktikumsraum' of the Institut of Astro- and Particle Physics. The exercises (1 hour) take place in four blocks of 3 hours each at the Coudé teaching-telescope of the Observatory in Hötting. MOTTO: Get as much basic knowledge as necessary to do as much practical work as possible. FUNDAMENTAL TOPICS: Astronomical coordinate systems, time (solar/siderial), basic telescope optics, telescope systems, brightness, colour, Doppler Effect, CCD-techniques. EXERCISES ON THE ZEISS-COUDE TEACHING-TELESCOPE: From basic observing techniques to naked eye observations and CCD-imaging. OTHER EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM: Working with raw images and spectra from telescopes as well as sky charts and astronomical almanacs.

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).

Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations"

Will be discussed in the first lesson.
