706809 VU Astro- and Particlephysics A: Astroparticle Physics 1
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 16.09.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents shall have gained a solid understanding of the principal messengers in astroparticle physics, can relate to the diversity of research methodology in this field and understand important scientific results in contemporary astroparticle physics.
Astroparticle physics is the science branch related to the most energetic physical processes and phenomena in our Universe. We will comprehensively introduce the principal observation channels available to astroparticle physics. Measurement principles, scientific results and their physical interpretations of the four basic messengers of astroparticle physics will be discussed: (1) cosmic rays, (2) energetic gamma-rays, (3) neutrinos, and (4) gravitational waves.
A follow-up "Astroparticle Physics 2" will feature astroparticle physics in the early Universe (BAU, BBN, CMB), advanced topics in mulitmessenger physics as well as direct and indirect approaches to the Dark Matter problem in non-accelerator particle physics.
A lecture part will be accompanied with topical exercises connecting the content of the lectures with actual problem solving.
The assessment modus will be defined at the start of the terms.
Primary literature: Grupen - Astroparticle Physics (2nd edition, Springer 2020) - ebook access through UIBK
Suited for students at the begin of their MSc studies. Knowledge from experimental and theoretical physics of the preceding bachelor studies is expected.
This VU3 can substitute the Grundkonzepte Astro- & Teilchenphysik as offered in the old MSc curriculum.
