winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 19.04.2022 | Place course on memo listStudents have an overview of properties of viruses, bacteria, archaea and fungi, of basic aspects of microbial growth and the ecological significance of microorganisms
The first part of the lecture deals with the following topics: definition of “microbiology”; overview of viruses, prions, bacteria, archaea and fungi; evolution of microorganisms; nutritional and environmental requirements of microorganisms; microbial growth; inhibition and killing of microorganisms. The second part of the lecture deals with the ecological significance of microorganisms in water and soil, nutrient cycles, symbioses and biofilms. Finally the role of microorganisms in food spoilage and food poisoning is considered.
