The aim of this seminar is the generation and optimization of structures based on parametric geometries. A selection of generation principles and structural types serves as the basis for the development of new, creative variants.

After a playful examination of the available variants, the students should deepen their understanding of the parametric simulation of structures by examining one of the generative or structural principles.

Integrative development and analysis of architecture-based structural concepts with the help of digital, parametric design tools (Karamba).

First, there is an introduction to the use of the finite element plug-in 'Karamba3D', which is integrated into the Grasshopper visual scripting environment for Rhinoceros3D. The basics of defining parametric structural models are explained using simple examples.

In the second step, different generation and optimization strategies for parametric structural models are examined.

Parallel to the design of M1 building construction, a generation principle is then applied or adapted to the design ideas developed there

The focus is on:

Parametric geometries

Geometry development based on structural optimization algorithms

Course examination according to § 7, statute section on "study-law regulations".

Will be discussed in the first lesson.

Rhino, the basics of Grasshopper

The course will presumably take place in a hybrid form with optional presence parts. Details will be communicated at the beginning of the course according to general regulations.

The implementation of this seminar is linked to Entwurfsstudio 1 hochbau (Markus Malin, Karolin Schmidbaur, Gonzalo Vaillo), but can also be attended independently.
