The students know current and historical forms of representation of gender and ethnicity in different cultural symbolization systems, they can grasp the interactions between gender and ethnic representations and the (re) constructions of other social realities as well as perceive and reflect on gender-specific aspects in cultural studies. The focus is on the analysis of representation.

The seminar departs from the idea of the long-durée of colonial and imperial categories related to notions of gender, race, ethnicity. As such it navigates, historically and theoretically,  through historical reconstruction of gender in the context of colonialism, and postcolonialism; more recent elaborations on intersectionality, social reproduction theory, cultural studies as well as critical secular studies

During the seminar, students will present a topic of the session, followed by a group discussion. The presentations should comprise groups of 3 or 4 students addressing and engaging with all of the texts of the session, everyone should prepare and present the main ideas of the texts, while critically engaging with the content.
