Students are able to identify and evaluate fundamental structures, processes, developments and

trends of the various media systems, country-specific communication cultures and their

influence on public opinion. Using various theoretical approaches, students can analyze factors

that alter communication systems. Moreover, they can connect political-cultural attitudes to

country-specific patterns and various communication practices.

Structures of European media systems, country-specific communication cultures, changes in political communication practice and their influence on public opinion formation are in the focus of this lecture. In the first part of the lecture an overview of basic theoretical concepts, models and considerations (e.g. by Hallin and Mancini (2003) or Blumler and Kavanagh (1999)) will be given. In the second part of the lecture, current processes and aspects of (modern) political communication in mediatized mass democracies (such as populism, fake news, hate speech, opinion manipulation) will be considered and discussed.
