434360 VU Nudging
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 25.04.2022 | Place course on memo listAfter taking this class, students will have a broad understanding of the basic principles of behavioral economics (as well as judgment and decision making) and will have learned how to apply these principles to design nudges, or interventions to solve real-world challenges by subtly changing people’s choices for their and society’s benefit.
In the lecture this course provides an overview of the psychological and economic factors that affect choice and motivate behavior. It reviews empirical research on how to use these behavioral insights to design interventions meant to improve people’s welfare by helping them make better decisions for themselves (including about their health and their finances) and for the world.
In the seminar part students will in small groups design their own nudges for environments they are familiar with (e.g. the university, the town, a skiing resort, etc.)
Lecture, discussion and student presentations.
Student presentations and written exam at the end of the course
Academic articles and book chapters along with a selection of relevant articles from newspapers and magazines reporting on successful real-world applications of nudges. Materials will be provided in OLAT
Successful completion of four compulsory modules in the core area of management and/or economics acc. to §5 par. 1
Due to the current Covid situation and the requirements of the university management, it is not yet foreseeable whether the course can be held completely in attendance. It is possible that especially at the beginning of the summer semester the course will still have to be held virtually. Please be aware of possible changes at short notice.
