summer semester 2022 | Last update: 17.02.2022 | Place course on memo listBroadening the opportunities for students either moving into international careers or further studies by providing them with an overview of an exciting element of the global financial system. Further equipping students considering careers in banking and banking related fields including consulting.
We start with a brief history of money and banking together with their evolution into the sophisticated global financial system we have today. We see how international banking and financial capitals fit into the global economic system. This important systemic cog is indispensable to the modern world, but it is a fragile industry susceptible to booms and busts hence the need for effective regulation. We then move on to the business of international banking which encompasses a broad range of activities from traditional banking (deposit taking and lending) to sophisticated corporate finance activities (investment banking) together with the less visible part of international banking which is the payment system. We will also look at the emergence of Fintech and the growth of Islamic Banking.
Combination of lectures and class discussions.
Final exam (100%). Minimum pass rate is 60%.
Reading list will be provided via OLAT and in class. Reflecting the dynamic nature of international banking, students are expected to follow current developments in the financial world through the financial pages of newspapers including Financial Times, The Economist and others (available in Sowi library). At the minimum, Google News!
Business English language knowledge at working level.
Concepts learned in VO are developed further through class discussions and group work in PS. Hak Yeung has 30 years’ experience in global finance including international banking, investment banking and private equity. This expertise will enrich students’ understanding of international banking.
