Broadening the opportunities for students either moving into international careers or further studies by providing them with an overview of an exciting element of the global financial system. Further equipping students considering careers in banking and banking related fields including consulting.

We see how international banking and financial capitals fit into the global economic system. This important systemic cog is indispensable to the modern world, but it is a fragile industry susceptible to booms and busts hence the need for effective regulation. We then move on to the business of international banking which encompasses a broad range of activities from traditional banking (deposit taking and lending) to sophisticated corporate finance activities (investment banking) together with the less visible part of international banking which is the payment system. We will also look at the emergence of Fintech and the growth of Islamic Banking.

Students will be encouraged to bring in concepts learned from other parts of the courses they have attended or work experience. Concepts learned in VO are developed further through class discussions and group work in PS.

Class participation (20%), group presentation (30%) and final group written project (50%). Minimum pass rate is 60%.

Reading list will be provided via OLAT and in class. Reflecting the dynamic nature of international banking, students are expected to follow current developments in the financial world through the financial pages of newspapers including Financial Times, The Economist and others (available in Sowi library). At the minimum, Google News!

Business English language knowledge at working level.

Individual contribution to group work will be part of overall assessment.

Due to the current Covid situation and the requirements of the university management, it is not yet foreseeable whether the course can be held completely in attendance. It is possible that especially at the beginning of the summer semester the course will still have to be held virtually. Please be aware of possible changes at short notice.
