Knowledge about the relations between the pictorial (especially photographic) representation of human bodies (in fictional and factual discourses), the categories of the perception of subject identity (gender, race, class) and the technological and economic basis of the production, mediation and reception of visual material.

Photographs of the human body are ubiquitous: in advertising, on selfie platforms, in everyday news coverage, in art photography, in private family albums, in archives and other institutions of memory, in fashion photography, etc. This means, among other things, that photography plays a central role in the social process of forming subject identity – more than ever before. This further means that subject identity is constructed along the demarcation of visibility and invisibilisation, making the question of what is and can be visually perceived (and what is not) central. The seminar will address this question in different fields and discourses (art, advertising, reporting, etc.) using different examples.

Lecture; (oral) presentations; discussion.

Cooperation; (oral) presentations; seminar papers (25 pages).
