Students are able to recognize and assess the requirements and quality of literary criticism in journalistic practice. They also have practical experience in independently writing journalistic texts and are familiar with the work steps and general conditions required for the publication of a text.

This course provides insight into literary criticism as a journalistic practice. In two teaching blocks, participants will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the essential features of the various text genres of literary criticism and also to write book reviews, portraits, reports, interviews, blog entries, etc. themselves. The first two-day block by Renate Giacomuzzi gives an overview of the history, function and characteristics of journalistic literary criticism in print and online media. Examples from the collection of journalistic literary criticism in the Innsbruck newspaper archive will be analyzed

and discussed. The second block is led by Gerlinde Tamerl, who has a broad experience as a professional literary mediator in the publishing industry, the press and book trade. She will accompany the students in the production of journalistic writing. The aim of the exercise is to complete a short book review that, if possible, will be published in an online or print magazine. In addition, the participants will also be given a guided tour on site, which will give them concrete insights into the various fields of work in the book trade.

Further, offers for praxis experiences will be added if possible.
