You will get a systematic and historical overview of canonical literature theories. This will provide you an insight into the huge variety of scientific questions in our discipline. And you should become acquainted with different methods of text analysis.

You will get a systematic and historical overview of the most important theories on literature, culture and media (hermeneutics, reception aesthetic, structuralism, poststructuralism, cultural and media studies). We will deal with fundamental questions of our discipline which only seem to be clear, but which we have to challenge, e.g.: What is literature? What is the difference between text and work of art? What is an author? What does 'paratext' mean?

Lecture with powerpoint-slides and exemplary passages from primary sources; regular attendance is required and notes should be made. Additionally, selected readings from primary sources and chapters from textbooks of literary theory and literary studies will be mandatory.
