After participating in the course, students will be able to apply media linguistic categories of analysis, develop specific media linguistic research questions, and independently analyze and critically evaluate the media-specific design of science communication.

Although its origins can be traced far back into the past, the idea of sustainability only became a guiding principle for political, social and economic action a few years ago. In this exercise, we will explore the history and current media discourses surrounding the concept of sustainability and examine the topic from a media linguistics perspective. The course is designed as a lecture and an exercise: After an introduction to basic media linguistic issues and analytical concepts, the focus will be on exemplary analyses of various media sources from traditional mass media as well as from social media. We will test the use of digital methods in different exercise settings, develop media linguistic questions together and test them in the context of an empirical group project.
