Skills for critical examination and presentation of essential methods and strategies in Media Studies applied to a concrete example.

The seminar focuses on the examination of digital corpora as an access to language and interaction on digital platforms. The reflective handling of digital data is a central area of competence in the age of digital transformation. Corpora as digitally available collections of natural language data are used in linguistic and media studies research to gain empirically grounded new insights into linguistic structures and patterns as well as to build digital language resources (e.g. digital dictionaries) based on corpora. In the course we will work on the basics of corpus linguistics and get an overview of the corpus landscape. We will also highlight the specifics of different media environments and digital platforms. In addition to multilingual corpora of spoken scientific language, there are also multilingual IBK corpora (CMC corpora for 'corpora of computer-mediated communication'), which provide empirical access to digital and multimodal communication (e.g. in Facebook, WhatsApp or Wikipedia).

Discussion of different theories and models, sample analysis

Presentation, term paper

Will be discussed in the first lesson.

Note: The course is part of the AURORA network and is closely linked to a parallel seminar at the partner university Duisburg Essen. In the course we will cooperate at several points with the participants of the parallel course Digital Communication, Platforms and (Language) Resources in Contexts of Mediation (course instructor: Prof. Eva Gredel).
