This lecture offers a historical survey of major works and artistic movements in American literature of the twentieth century. We will study important developments in poetry, drama, narrative fiction, and non-fictional prose by considering a variety of voices and contexts: experimental voices of the literary avant-gardes, dissident voices of counter-cultural movements, popular voices of mass culture; African American, Asian American and Native American literatures; works on regional, urban, and immigrant communities as well as male, female and queer identities.

Prerequisite for the Master's Programme: none
The lecture "VO American Literature and Culture (mit Leseliste)“ can be attended as the lecture "VO American Literature and Culture II” with an additional reading list. If you wish to obtain credits for both lectures, the lectures’ contents must differ substantially.
Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training program - BA/MA English and American Studies), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
