611061 VU Practical Course on Romance Cultural Areas: How to plan, organise and realise an international scientific conference
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 16.02.2022 | Place course on memo list• The students gain insight into the process of an international academic conference (in the field of contrastive linguistics), acquiring at the same time knowledge as well as various competences and skills regarding its structured and accurate planning, preparation and realisation (the conference will take place from 7th to 10th September 2022 [Monday-Thursday], see https://www.uibk.ac.at/congress/kontrastivelinguistik2022/). For in several professional activities suchlike or similar organisational skills nowadays are required, the students will hopefully profit from the respective learning outcomes also for their future professional life.
• The centre of attention of the course is the result-oriented and systematic team work as well as the "common goal", i.e. the successful realisation of the conference.
• Finally, by attending some conference presentations the students will also have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the field of Romance linguistics.
The conference to be planned together with the students and realised in September 2022 (Title: "9th International Conference on German-Romance and Intraromance Contrastive Linguistics") normally takes place every four years and has already been organized three times in Innsbruck (2008, 2012, and 2016). In this course, the students will experience in practice how the conference is first systematically planned and then realised, and which are the different aspects to be considered in doing so (cf. e.g. financial matters [conference fee, funding possibilities / sponsorship etc.], website, abstract reviewing, book of abstracts, coffee break catering, conference dinner, social programme, information about the city / hotels / restaurants etc.).
The present course has primarily workshop and "learning by doing" character; the students participate actively in the conference preparations and cooperate with the professor:
- Conception, planning and preparation of the conference
- Attendance and assistance at the conference itself: 7th-10th September 2022
- (presumably:) Short report on new insights and skills gained during the course, including feedback for the professor and suggestions for improvement with regard to similar courses in the future
What counts is the reached workload (total hours of work), the active participation during the lessons and the conference itself, and – as the case may be – a short report to be written at the end of the course).
If you are interested in it and would like to get a general idea of the topics from the last conference, you can take a look at the book of abstract from 2016 (see https://www.uibk.ac.at/congress/kontrastivelinguistik2016/tagungsprogramm/abstractband.html.de).

• ATTENTION: As the conference taking place from 7th to 10th September 2022 is directly connected to the course and the participation in it is an obligatory course part, the CONFERENCE DATES NEED TO BE SAVED!
• The course is dedicated to all BA students of Romance Languages (French, Italian, Spanish).
• In addition, students of other subject-related BA studies (e.g. Translation Studies) and/or with knowledge of a Romance language have the possibility to attend the course, e.g. in the context of a module on "Interdisciplinary Competences", if such a module is provided for in their curriculum and credit is guaranteed by the responsible study supervisor.
