Topic-specific use of skills for critically analysing sources and methodological skills in the practice of ancient history.

Greek and Roman coins are sometimes termed "ancient newspapers" and considered as examples of ancient mass media (e.g. R. Günther, 2008, 210). Indeed, coins are a very important source for ancient historians. The lecture will give a historical overview on the development of the monetary system (from barter trade to the use of minted coins). In a second step we will analyse coins as bearers of messages. Through the work with copies of ancient coins the possibilities but also limitations of source interpretation will be discussed. 

Combination of lecture, reading tasks and group work.
