645007 PS Medieval History
summer semester 2022 | Last update: 22.11.2021 | Place course on memo listThe seminar introduces students to the main tools of research in medieval history. Students learn how to analyse different sources and write a paper based on a source.
The Crusades are often seen as an expression of a "medieval" mentality that was deeply characterised by piety, brutality and fanatical faith. However, this course deals with the fact that the so-called crusade movement is a far more complex historical development. By working with specialised literature and sources, critical approaches to the crusades will be developed. The course will primarily deal with the so-called "First Crusade" and the crusade movement up to the late 12th century.
Reading of specialized literature, joint discussion and working with medieval sources. Part of the work assignments will be elaborated in small groups.
Regular participation in the seminar, contribution in class (discussion and presentation), short treatise, written exam.
