Students gain an understanding of central spatial theories and spatial dimensions of culture and their application across different fields of research, both in theoretical (literary and cultural studies, linguistics, history and anthropology) and practical application (in the form of field trips). Multifaceted examination of the dissertation projects (especially in regad to their spatial approaches) of the participants in an international and interdisciplinary atmosphere.  

Generic competences: Promotion of intercultural competencies; global learning; teamwork (collaborative work on theories); promotion of oral communication skills (clear and comprehensible transmission of complex content in academic English)


In the course of the "spatial turn", space has regained importance in cultural studies. In this seminar, we want to devote ourselves to selected models of describing space and relate them to the dissertation projects of the participants using different methods.

Critical reading and discussion of texts, presentations, field trips

Presentations of spatial topics from the participants' PhD projects.

A reader with key texts will be made available to participants in advance.

Prospective applicants must submit a CV and a short summary (max. 2000 characters) of the dissertation project (in English) to Sarah Agath, the coordinator of the Summer School, by March 25, 2022: sarah.agath@uibk.ac.at.

The seminar - an AURORA Summer School - will take place from July 19 to 23, 2022  in the University Center Obergurgl (in Obergurgl, Tyrol).
